Renault shows the series version of the Alaskan at the IAA. The pick-up will enter the market in different variations and diverse conversion solutions.

The new Alaskan complements the van fleet of French manufacturer Renault. As medium-sized pick-up with up to one ton loading capacity, it addresses a wide clientele. Seen worldwide, this pick-up class comprises 17 percent of the entire lightweight commercial vehicle segment – with rising tendency. The Alaskan is the manufacturer’s second pick-up, after the compact pick-up Dacia Oroch. The Renault Alaskan is equipped with a 2.3-liter diesel engine (160 and 190 PS). The familiar four-cylinder already proved itself in the Renault Master and is offered as either a standard version or with Twin-Turbo Technology. Alternatively to the standard six-speed transmission, there is also a seven-speed automatic. Clients can moreover choose between front- and four-wheel drive.

Identical construction as Nissan Navara

Complementary to the four-wheel drive, the Renault Alaskan sports an electronic differential lock with limited slip. It monitors the rotation speed of the opposite wheels on each axle via the brake sensors. If one of the wheels threatens to spin, and if the difference in wheel speeds exceeds a certain threshold value, the system brakes the wheel in question within a split second. The system improves ground traction, raises stability and increases driving safety.

The Alaskan will start production in Vuernavaca, Mexico, alongside the indentically constructed Nissan Navara. But the production will be expanded to other, worldwide factories. The Renault Alaskan’s market launch already took place in South America. Sales start in Columbia, after which other countries worldwide will follow. The offer includes single- and double cabins, a version with a chassis of two different loading area lengths, as well as narrow and wide bodies. In addition, the Alaskan offers diverse conversion solutions, for example as an ambulance, fire truck or recovery vehicle. Whether the Alaskan will be coming to Europe – and therefore to Germany – is still in discussion in Paris.
