Since July 2016, vehicles are allowed to drive without exterior mirrors in the European Union, based on the UNECE R 46.
Automotive supplier Continental presents the fitting solution at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016: the idea of the ProViuMirror may not be completely new – the system was first presented at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2014 – but has been developed further since then. Added now is a solution which Continental calls ProViuDetect.
This system works with a complicated algorithm, which recognizes pedestrians or cyclists thanks to sensor readings and, for example, displays them in the vehicle’s interior on the ProViuMirror. The system localizes road users and calculates the time until a possible collision based on vehicle locations.
The advantage of this system: it evaluates whether the situation is critical and warns the driver accordingly. In this case, this happens via a pulsing LED-light band in the driver’s cabin, which draws attention to the dangerous situation. An accoustic warning signal is also possible.
The ProViuMirro already ensures more safety – and less consumption
Whereby obviously the ProViuMirror already ensures more safety. With this solution, a camera monitoring systems is used on both the truck’s right and left side. Two cameras on either side of the vehicle replace the exterior mirrors and transfers the recordings to displays. The elimination of the large exterior mirrors improves the forward field of vision. Needless to say, the aerodynamics and therefore the consumption are also improved.
