The MAN hTGX - a newly developed heavy-duty truck with a hydrogen combustion engine - has won the Truck Innovation Award 2025. The journalists of the “International Truck of the Year” jury presented Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, with the prestigious award for the most innovative technical development of the year during the IAA TRANSPORTATION Press Day yesterday at the trade fair grounds in Hanover.

Unlike Munich's top soccer team, the new MAN hTGX completes the triple for the Bavarian manufacturer. After winning the Truck Innovation Award for the first time in 2019 for the aFAS Level 4 automated driverless road safety truck as well as for the ATLAS-L4 and ANITA autonomous driving projects in 2023, this is the third time that MAN Truck & Bus has won this trophy.

With 84 votes, the MAN hTGX clearly beat its competitors in this year's contest for the best truck innovation. The “Oxygen” from Renault Trucks, an electrically powered prototype of a distribution truck, came in second behind the Munich hydrogen-powered vehicle. Third place in the race for the TIA went to the S-eWay Fuel Cell (FCEV) from Iveco, a zero-emission long-distance vehicle with a fuel cell.

During a road test in Saalfelden, Austria, ITOY journalists praised the diesel-like performance and driveability of the hTGX, which is delivered by the MAN H4576 six-cylinder hydrogen engine with a displacement of 16.8 liters and spark ignition.

With the hydrogen combustion engine, which can be driven in a similar way to a conventional diesel truck, MAN is putting a practical alternative to the purely battery-electric truck on the road. Provided it is supplied with green hydrogen, the innovative heavy-duty truck from Bavaria meets all the requirements for a clean-emission commercial vehicle of the future.

The judges also highlighted the truck's virtually zero-emission CO₂ footprint, the range of around 600 kilometers achieved by the 700-bar hydrogen pressure tanks and the simplified exhaust gas aftertreatment system.

The Truck Innovation Award, which was established by the ITOY jury, recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of advanced transport solutions. The ITOY jury consists of 25 commercial vehicle editors and senior journalists representing leading truck magazines from Europe and South Africa.

Gianenrico Griffini, Chairman of the International Truck of the Year Jury, summarized the decision and said: “The MAN hTGX opens a new chapter in the decarbonization of road transport. It could be the vehicle of choice for heavy-duty applications, for example in the construction industry or in challenging climatic conditions.”
