Higher, faster, further – Scania’s legendary V8 diesel models already radiate this credo. At the IAA TRANSPORTATION, however, it can now also be attributed to the Swedes’ e-trucks: At stand C60 in Hall 12, a tractor unit with a battery capacity of no less than 728 kWh is celebrating its premiere. The developers have made this possible by installing a fifth battery pack under the cab. According to the manufacturer, this increases the range to at least 530 kilometers. In the performance chapter, the EM C1-4 drivetrain in the exhibition truck delivers 400 kW, which is transmitted to the wheels via a four-speed gearbox.
Scania also relies on its proven modular approach for its electric trucks such as this new flagship. In addition to a large selection of e-machines and battery options, Scania can also offer various chassis, power take-offs, cab variants and a range of axles.
But Scania is not stopping at e-trucks alone. A gas truck is also in the spotlight at the IAA TRANSPORTATION. This R 460 can be supplied with both compressed biogas (CBG) and liquefied biogas (LBG). This means it can refuel at any gas filling station and, according to Scania, reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent while driving. In real life, customers will certainly only opt for one of the two systems, as the Swedes know. However, the exhibition truck is intended to express the versatility of the product range.
The Scania 460 R, labeled as the “Green Truck” with a 460 hp inline six-cylinder diesel engine, stands for maximum fuel efficiency. This very truck is the current winner of the Green Truck comparison test, which is carried out annually by the TecVia publishing house in Munich.
However, Scania is not only focusing on the vehicles; digital solutions are also intended to make life easier for customers. The new Scania ProDriver, for example, was developed by drivers for drivers, according to the Swedes. The entertaining digital coaching tool helps drivers to develop sustainable driving habits. This should lead to a reduction in fuel consumption of up to five percent. From 2025, all new Scania vehicles with combustion engines will be delivered with ProDriver, but the tool is also available for existing vehicle fleets.
In addition to the ProDriver, Scania is also introducing a new service portfolio. Scania 360 consists of predefined modules that are identical throughout Europe. The customer can choose between a basic maintenance contract and the Flexible Maintenance Service, a condition-based maintenance service that generally leads to more uptime and fewer workshop visits.
Also on board is Scania ProCare with the preventive replacement of critical components and digital services such as Fleet Positioning and Vehicle Performance. “Preventive replacement is complemented by a new service called Scania Guardian,” says Mikael Blom, Product Manager at Scania. “Customers with a Scania Guardian contract will receive a heads-up from us before something breaks or fails, based on connectivity, our user-generated data and algorithms. This is the best way to keep trucks on the road and in production.”
